Braised Cabbage like in Kindergarten (Meatless) – Step-by-step Recipe

Braised Cabbage like in Kindergarten (Meatless) – Step-by-step RecipeSource: Murziknata, AdobeStock

Many still remember that soft and aromatic braised cabbage served in kindergarten. It's cooked without meat, but turns out surprisingly delicious and far from bland. This simple side dish pairs well with cutlets, sausages, or mashed potatoes. Here's the recipe!

Preparation time: 45 minutes.
Servings: 4.

Ingredients

  • 700 g white cabbage;
  • 1 carrot;
  • 1 small onion;
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste;
  • 100 ml water;
  • 30 g butter;
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil;
  • 1 teaspoon sugar;
  • 1 teaspoon salt;
  • 1 bay leaf.

Step-by-step Recipe

  1. Shred the cabbage, grate the carrot on a coarse grater, and finely chop the onion.
  2. Heat butter and vegetable oil in a deep pan. Sauté the onion and carrot for about 4-5 minutes until soft.
  3. Add the cabbage, stir, and cook for another 5 minutes until it slightly reduces in volume.
  4. Separately, dilute the tomato paste in water, add sugar, salt, and bay leaf. Pour the tomato sauce over the cabbage, cover, and simmer over low heat for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Done!
